IRIS NEKEMAN
My journey into Earth Stewardship, regenerative finance, decolonizing wealth, and non-traditional currencies began when I was 18.
Since then, I’ve worked with grassroots initiatives, social enterprises, and bioregional communities — while also supporting high-level boardrooms of corporations and NGOs to reimagine the way we relate to money, power, and purpose.
I quickly realized that the world I was taught to believe in didn’t align with sense of our greater potential. So, while earning degrees in Organizational Science and Strategic Leadership toward Sustainability, I also studied with Indigenous elders, joined Theory U’s U.Lab, and explored community currencies, alternative trading systems, and Non-Violent Communication.
This led to a portfolio of sustainable investments at the age of 22, an early expression of aligning money with meaning.
After a few years in corporate consulting, my body made it clear that path wasn’t for me. I left and co-founded two bioregional initiatives in the Netherlands focused on local food security and preserving native cultures, deepening my connection with Indigenous teachings and the principle of reciprocity.
That path eventually led me to Costa Rica’s Osa Peninsula, where I joined the founding teams of Los Higuerones and the ReGenerOsa Collective — both rooted in regenerating communities, ecosystems, and local economies.
To live this life, I had to completely rethink money and value. Through listening, research, experimentation, and co-creation of community currencies, I designed a multi-capital income model — a resilient, diversified, mostly passive system that allows me to live within a gift economy while funding my life and impact work.
Today, this model supports my impact work at Los Higuerones, my gift-based coaching, and my ongoing mission to uplift the people and places quietly regenerating the world from the roots up.
*Los Higuerones is a community hub dedicated to creating healthier social, ecological and economic alternatives to promote the resilience of the local people.
